Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google? Six Real Reasons

You searched your own business name, or the thing you do plus your suburb, and you are nowhere. It is a horrible feeling, and it usually kicks off a panic about being penalised or banned. Take a breath. Nine times out of ten it is not a penalty. It is one of a handful of boring, fixable things.

There are six usual reasons, roughly most common first. Work down the list and you will normally spot yours near the top.

Rule these three out first: you are too close to it so search logged out, your Google Business Profile is not verified, or your site is not indexed yet. These solve most cases. RULE THESE OUT FIRST 1 You are too close to it SEARCH LOGGED OUT, OR ASK A MATE ACROSS TOWN 2 Your profile is not verified CLAIM AND VERIFY YOUR GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE 3 Your site is not indexed yet SEARCH SITE:YOURDOMAIN.COM.AU IN GOOGLE
Most "not on Google" cases are one of these three.

1. You are searching from your own screen, so results look wrong

Before you assume the worst, rule this out. When you search your own business, Google knows it is you, and your own results are skewed by your location, your history and whether you are logged in. You might rank fine for everyone else and still see something odd.

How to check: search in a private or incognito window, logged out. Better still, ask a friend across town to search the same thing. If they can find you, you do not have a ranking problem, you have a “you are too close to it” problem.

2. Your Google Business Profile is not verified (or does not exist)

For local searches and Google Maps, everything runs on your Google Business Profile. If you have never claimed and verified one, you simply are not in the running for the map pack.

How to check: search your business name in Google Maps. No listing, or a listing marked “claim this business”, means it is not verified. Claim it, verify it (usually by postcard, phone or video), and fill it out completely. This alone fixes a huge share of “I’m not on Google” cases.

3. Your website is not indexed yet

If it is your website that is missing rather than your map listing, Google may simply not have added it to its index yet. New sites, or pages that nothing links to, can sit unseen for a while.

How to check: search site:yourdomain.com.au in Google. If nothing comes up, Google has not indexed your site. Set up Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and request indexing. Sorting out indexing and crawl blockers like this is standard technical SEO work. If pages are being actively blocked, see the next reason.

4. You are accidentally blocking Google

This one catches more businesses than you would think, usually after a redesign. A site can tell search engines “do not index me”, and sometimes that switch gets left on when the site goes live. WordPress has a “discourage search engines” tickbox. A robots.txt file or a noindex tag can do the same.

How to check: in Google Search Console, the Page Indexing report will tell you if pages are blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex. If you are not sure what any of that means, this is a fair point to get someone to look. It is a five-minute fix once you find it, and invisible until you do.

5. Your details do not match, so Google is not sure who you are

If your name, address and phone number are written differently across your website, your Business Profile and the directories you appear in, Google cannot confidently tie it all to one business. That uncertainty can keep you out of local results.

How to check: look up your business on your site, your GBP, and a couple of directories, and compare them line by line. Make them identical, down to “St” versus “Street”. Consistency sounds trivial. It is one of the quieter reasons local businesses underperform.

6. You are ranking, just not on page one

Sometimes you are showing up. You are on page three, and nobody scrolls to page three. That is a competitiveness gap rather than a visibility bug, and it is the one that actually takes ongoing work.

How to check: search the term you care about, logged out, and look past the first page. If you are there but buried, the fix is the long game: a faster, clearer site, a stronger Google Business Profile, steady reviews, and content that answers what people are searching. That is local SEO: it is covered in our plain-English guide, and it is what we do for Melbourne businesses week to week.

Work through them in order

Most “why isn’t my business on Google” mysteries are solved in the first three reasons: you are too close to it, your profile is not verified, or your site is not indexed yet. Rule those out before you assume anything sinister. Real penalties are rare, and they are usually earned by dodgy tactics, not by an honest business that just never finished its setup.

FAQ

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

The most common reason is that your Google Business Profile is not claimed or verified. Without a verified profile you cannot appear in Google Maps or the local pack. Claim it, verify it, and complete every field, then give it a couple of weeks.

Either Google has not indexed it yet, or something is blocking it. Search site:yourdomain.com.au to see what Google has indexed. If nothing shows, connect Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and check that no page is set to noindex or blocked in robots.txt.

Is my business being penalised by Google?

Almost certainly not. Genuine penalties are rare and usually follow spammy tactics like buying links or fake reviews or stuffing keywords into your business name. For an ordinary business that has vanished, the cause is nearly always an unverified profile, an unindexed site, or inconsistent details.

How long until my new business shows up on Google?

A verified Google Business Profile can appear within days to a couple of weeks. A brand-new website may take a few weeks to be fully indexed and longer to rank competitively. Setting up Google Search Console and submitting your sitemap speeds up the website side.
