Melburnians run about 18,000 searches for Grand Final information every September. About three quarters of that searching lands in Grand Final week itself, and most of it asks one of two things: where to watch the game, and what is open on the Friday. That Friday is an official Victorian public holiday. In 2026 it falls on Friday 25 September, with the Grand Final itself on Saturday 26 September.
We pulled 12 months of Melbourne keyword data and two years of Google Trends history to measure the spike: how big it gets, when it arrives, and how hard it compresses into one week. The short version for venue owners: the crowd looks you up inside one seven-day window, and your Google listing does the answering, right or wrong.
Key Takeaways
- Melburnians ran about 18,000 searches across seven Grand Final phrases in September 2025, covering where to watch, holiday trading hours and whether the Friday is a day off.
- “where to watch afl grand final” goes from near zero, about 10 Melbourne searches in a quiet month, to 6,600 in September: roughly a 660x jump.
- About three quarters of September’s search interest lands in Grand Final week itself, a Google Trends index of 91 out of 120 across the four September weeks, measured Australia-wide.
- The 2026 ramp has started: “grand final public holiday” hit 2,900 in August 2025, more than half its September peak of 5,400, and July 2026 is running ahead of last year.
- We audit 300 to 500 Melbourne venue profiles on 18 and 19 September 2026. Results publish on this page on 20 September.
Melbourne runs about 18,000 Grand Final searches every September
September 2025 produced about 18,000 Melbourne searches across the seven Grand Final phrases we track. For most of the year the same phrases produce almost nothing. The 2024 Google Trends curve shows the same September shape, so we treat 2025 as typical rather than a one-off.
The biggest phrase is “where to watch afl grand final”. In a quiet month it records about 10 Melbourne searches, which Google Ads effectively rounds to nothing. In September 2025 it recorded 6,600, roughly 660 times its baseline. The public holiday questions behave the same way: “grand final public holiday” went from a December low of 50 to 5,400, and the bare phrase “grand final friday” from 40 to 2,400.
| Keyword | Quiet month | Sept 2025 | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| where to watch afl grand final | 10 (most months) | 6,600 | ~660x |
| grand final public holiday | 50 (Dec 2025) | 5,400 | ~108x |
| afl grand final public holiday | 90 (Feb 2026) | 2,900 | ~32x |
| grand final friday | 40 (Dec 2025) | 2,400 | ~60x |
The tail of the table matters too. “where to watch afl grand final melbourne” recorded 480 searches against 6,600 for the version without the city, so people type the generic phrase and let Google work out where they are. “pubs showing afl grand final” managed just 40, so they rarely name the venue type either. Searchers ask the broad question, and the results page, mostly the map pack, decides which venues get seen. Across Victoria, the literal question “is grand final friday a public holiday” was typed 210 times in September 2025.
About three quarters of it lands in Grand Final week
September’s demand is not spread evenly across the month. Google Trends tracks weekly interest in “afl grand final” across Australia, and the 2025 build was a cliff: an index of 7 in the week of 7 September, 16 in the week of 14 September, then 91 in Grand Final week, 21 to 27 September.
Sum the index across the four weeks that cover September, starting with the quiet opening week of 31 August at 6, and it totals 120. Grand Final week alone contributes 91 of those points, which is about three quarters of the month’s search interest landing in seven days. 2024 followed the same shape: an index of 18 the week before the game, then 100 in Grand Final week itself.
Whatever your Google listing says during that one week is what the year's biggest local audience sees. A venue that fixes its details after the long weekend has missed the people it fixed them for.

The ramp for 2026 has already started
People do not wait for September to plan the long weekend. “grand final public holiday” recorded 2,900 Melbourne searches in August 2025, more than half its September peak of 5,400. The 2026 curve is running ahead of that: the same phrase pulled 1,300 searches in July 2026, ahead of where it sat at the same point last year.
The early searchers are the planners, the people sorting out the day off and the lunch booking weeks ahead. Set your holiday hours now and your listing is correct for them as well as for the game-day crowd, because a profile shows whatever it holds at the moment someone looks.
The missing number: how many venues have set their holiday hours
Every one of those searches ends at a listing, usually a Google Business Profile. And a profile shows a venue’s regular hours unless the owner sets special hours for the holiday. On a public holiday, an untouched profile quietly shows information that can be wrong in either direction: a closed venue that still reads as open, or changed hours that appear nowhere.
So the number that matters for Grand Final Friday is the percentage of Melbourne venues that have actually set special hours for Friday 25 September. We do not have that number yet, and as far as we can tell neither does anyone else. It cannot be measured early: the hours data Google exposes for a profile, in the same Places data that powers Maps listings, only includes upcoming special hours about seven days ahead.
We are measuring it at the last responsible moment: on 18 and 19 September we audit 300 to 500 Melbourne venue profiles and count exactly that.

What venues should do before Grand Final week
Six steps, all inside your Google Business Profile, all doable this week.
- Set special hours for Friday 25 September. Open your profile, then Edit profile, then Hours, then Special hours, and enter what the venue is actually doing on the day. Google’s special hours guide walks through each screen.
- Do it before Grand Final week starts. Three quarters of September’s searching lands in that one week. Hours set today are correct before the crowd arrives, instead of getting edited from a packed front bar on the Friday.
- Set Saturday 26 September while you are there. Grand Final day itself usually runs on different hours, and the same searchers keep looking right through the weekend.
- If you are showing the game, say so on the profile. Add a post and a current photo. “where to watch afl grand final” pulled 6,600 Melbourne searches last September, and a listing that never mentions the game gives those searchers nothing to go on. Recent photos and recent reviews usually decide the click.
- Check the basics while you are in there. Phone number, menu link, booking link. A search spike is the worst possible week for a dead menu link.
- If your venue does not show up at all, fix that first. Search your own name in Google Maps. If nothing sensible comes back, work through why a business is not showing on Google before worrying about hours.
None of this is complicated. It is the unglamorous accuracy work that local SEO in Melbourne mostly consists of, pointed at the one week of the year when the audience peaks.
How we measured this
Methodology
We measured monthly Melbourne search volume for eight Grand Final phrases across 12 months, plus two years of weekly Google Trends interest, and pulled everything on 30 August 2026.
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Data sources | Google Ads keyword volumes via DataForSEO; Google Trends, web search |
| Geography | Melbourne, Victoria for keyword volumes; Australia for Google Trends; one phrase measured Victoria-wide |
| Time period | 12 months to July 2026 for keyword volumes; August 2024 to August 2026, weekly, for Trends |
| What we measured | Monthly search volume for eight phrases; weekly interest index for “afl grand final” |
| Pulled | 30 August 2026, by Threefold Systems |
The limitations that matter:
- Google Ads rounds. Small volumes get rounded hardest, so a quiet-month figure of 10 is best read as near zero, and every multiple in this study as approximate.
- Single-city geo-targeting. The volumes count Melbourne searches only, apart from the one Victoria-wide phrase marked in the appendix. Regional and interstate demand sits on top of these numbers.
- Head terms only. We tracked eight exact phrases. Misspellings, longer variations and voice queries all sit outside them, so true demand is higher than 18,000, not lower.
FAQ
Is Grand Final Friday a public holiday?
Yes. The Friday before the AFL Grand Final is an official Victorian public holiday. In 2026 that is Friday 25 September, with the Grand Final itself on Saturday 26 September.
When do the venue audit results come out?
On 20 September 2026, on this page. We audit 300 to 500 Melbourne venue profiles on 18 and 19 September, because the hours data Google exposes for a profile only includes upcoming special hours about seven days ahead.
Where does the search data come from?
Google Ads keyword volumes via DataForSEO, geo-targeted to Melbourne, for the 12 months to July 2026, plus Google Trends weekly data for Australia from August 2024 to August 2026. We pulled everything on 30 August 2026. Google rounds these figures, so treat each one as an approximation.
